Hezbollah attacks northern Israel with dozens of rockets

Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, there have been repeated clashes with Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon. Now, Hezbollah has fired rockets into Israeli territory again. "In response" to the killing of their high-ranking commander Fuad Shukr, the militia announced.

Hezbollah in Lebanon said it had attacked Israel's north with dozens of rockets. The Iran-backed Islamist militia said it had fired "in response" to a previous deadly Israeli attack on the village of Shama in southern Lebanon, launching dozens of Katyusha rockets into Israel. Earlier, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah had announced a response from his militia to the killing of their high-ranking commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli attack.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, four Syrians were killed and five Lebanese injured in an Israeli attack on the village of Shama in the south of the country. An AFP photographer reported smoke at the scene, where two buildings were damaged and a vehicle burned.

Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, there have been repeated clashes with Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon and the Golan Heights, resulting in the deaths of 22 soldiers and 25 civilians on the Israeli side. In Lebanon, 542 people have been killed, according to AFP figures.

Shukr was killed on Tuesday in an Israeli attack in a suburb of Beirut. A day later, the chief of the radical Islamic Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an attack in Tehran. Israel has not commented on Haniyeh's killing. On Thursday, Israel announced that it had killed Hamas' military chief Mohammed Deif in an attack in the Gaza Strip on June 13. The attacks in Iran and Lebanon have fueled fears of an escalation of the Gaza war.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, stating they were retaliation for Fuad Shukr's death. The death toll might increase further if the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies due to these attacks.
