The Bavarian Minister of the Interior, Herrmann, does not hold the announced measures of the Federal Minister of the Interior in high regard.

Herrmann is dismantling Fazer's knife.

The number of knife attacks in Germany is rising. Interior Minister Faeser therefore wants to tighten gun laws so that only smaller knives are allowed in public. However, Bavarian Interior Minister Herrmann doubts that this measure can solve the problem.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann criticizes the planned knife bans by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser as "symbolic politics". The increase in knife-related offenses in recent years is worrying. But carrying knives is already very restricted: "That further knife bans can solve the problem of knife crime must be doubted," said Herrmann to the "Munich Mercury". For example, the killing of a policeman on the market square in Mannheim was committed "with a knife whose possession was already banned by current law," said the CSU politician.

Moreover, it is questionable "how this can be controlled in practice, especially at very busy places. Without consistent control, further bans would only provide false security," said Herrmann. The argument of deterrence through punishment also hardly convinces: "Because a potential attacker would probably not care if he commits another crime in addition to the capital offense punishable by up to life imprisonment." Herrmann proposes to give the police more control powers and to focus more on repeat and intensive offenders.

Faeser had announced stricter rules in view of the recently increased numbers of knife attacks in the "Bild am Sonntag". In public, knives may only be carried with a blade length of up to six centimeters instead of the previous twelve centimeters. Exceptions should only apply to household knives "in closed containers after purchase," explained the SPD politician. A general ban on switchblades should be created. Corresponding changes to the gun laws are to be presented soon, said Faeser. She also called on municipalities to create more weapon and knife-free zones.

Such tightening had previously been demanded by the states. Last year, 8951 cases of dangerous and serious bodily harm were reported, in which knives were used, either to injure someone or to threaten - an increase of 5.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Bavaria, led by Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, expresses skepticism towards the proposed knife bans by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, suggesting that they may be symbolic and not effective in reducing knife crime. Furthermore, Herrmann raises concerns about the feasibility of enforcing such bans, especially in crowded places, and the potential lack of deterrence.
