Hendrik Streeck is pursuing a bid for the German federal parliament, specifically the Bundestag.
As a respected virologist, Hendrik Streeck gains widespread recognition during the Corona outbreak. Towards the end of the previous year, he declares his intention to dive into politics. He aims to represent the Bonn CDU as a dominant figure in Berlin following the 2025 federal election.
The accomplished virologist, aged 47, clinched the vote in the Bonn CDU local association, thereby securing the Christian Democrats' nomination for their local candidate in the 2025 federal election. Streeck garnered 71.7% of the votes, as confirmed by a CDU spokesperson. This victory enables him to run as the CDU's direct candidate in the Bonn constituency. He bested the incumbent CDU district chairman, Christoph Jansen.
"Our city needs a formidable voice in Berlin once more – one that acknowledges the trials of our time and spearheads the right solutions," Streeck stated in a release. "We approach a crucial election, not just for Bonn, but for the entirety of Germany. This election is about bridging societal divisions, quelling populism, and revitalizing faith in our democratic institutions."
A CDU Member Before the Pandemic
Streeck serves as the head of the Institute of Virology at the University Hospital Bonn. Owing to his insightful media appearances during the coronavirus crisis, he became a household name in the country. He shared his views on various aspects of the virus, including its non-trivial nature and the importance of not exaggerating it.
Streeck had already been a part of the CDU before the pandemic,, as he himself revealed. In November 2023, word of his aspiration to run for the Bundestag spread. As a healthcare professional and researcher, he expressed his belief that our nation harbors a wealth of potential that remains untapped, necessitating its liberation to position Germany back on the global stage. To achieve this goal, he stressed, challenges must be recognized and promptly resolved.
The 2025 federal election is scheduled towards the end of September. The Bonn constituency was won by the Green Party's Katrin Babette Uhlig in the 2021 federal election. However, the constituency holds significant historical significance for the CDU, having once elected Konrad Adenauer.
In aligning with his political ambitions, Streeck formally joins the German Bundestag as a member of the CDU after his successful election campaign in 2025. Demonstrating his influence, Streeck frequently addresses issues of national importance in the German Bundestag, advocating for evidence-based policies and population health.
