Heavy rain and thunderstorm - Heavy weather in Rhine-Main-Area

A heavy thunderstorm with hail, heavy rain, and storm caused numerous call-outs for the fire department and police in parts of Hesse. No injured persons were reported. In Offenbach and its surroundings, the police reported especially pressed manhole covers on roads. In Dietzenbach (Offenbach district), an S-Bahn underpass was temporarily closed due to water masses. Over 400 alarm calls were reported at the control center in the Main-Kinzig district. The focus was on Hanau with around 330 emergency calls.

Gully covers were also pressed in other places, and trees were uprooted. The police also reported flooded roads or flying objects. There were probably traffic accidents due to aquaplaning as well. According to the police, no one was injured. In Erlensee, Maintal, Rodenbach, and Bruchköbel, firefighters were called to numerous sites. The focus of the interventions was on pumping out flooded basements.

Please help us over the garden fence

"The 400 alarm calls do not correspond to the number of actual intervention sites. Where the emergency services went, they received the next call for help right over the garden fence," reported Landrat Thorsten Stolz (SPD).

On Autobahns 45 and 66 in the Hanau area, emergency services removed five uprooted trees from the roads. On the federal road 43a between Hanau-Main Station and Hanau-Wolfgang, the water was knee-high on the road for a while, causing the road to be closed in the direction of Fulda.

In Hanau, many cellars were flooded, and two municipal parking garages were closed suddenly. The city hospital was also affected by the storm, but the operation is running normally again, according to Mayor Maximilian Bieri (SPD).

Further rain and thunderstorms expected

The Hessians must continue to prepare for rain and, in some places, also for thunderstorms. Today, there may be showers and thunderstorms in the northern part of the federal state, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). There may also be strong gusts of wind up to 55 kilometers per hour. After that, it will be mostly dry. The temperatures will be highest at 25 to 28 degrees. There will be a weak wind.

Tomorrow, there will be showers and strong thunderstorms with heavy rain, according to the DWD. There may be stormy gusts of wind up to 70 kilometers per hour and hail. The thermometer will show a maximum of 23 to 26 degrees. The risk of showers will be low on Saturday. The temperatures will be highest at 19 to 23 degrees.
