Storm - Heavy thunderstorm moves over Berlin and Brandenburg

A heavy thunderstorm with heavy rain has passed over Berlin, temporarily interrupting the summer weekly start. The Berlin Fire Department called for additional volunteer firefighters due to feared damages. The Fire Department advises in such cases to not stay outside, close windows at home, and secure objects on balconies.

Previously, the German Weather Service (DWD) had warned for Berlin, Potsdam, the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, and the Havelland region. For the Potsdam area, the DWD forecasted heavy rain with up to 40 liters per square meter and gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour. For northeastern Brandenburg, the DWD also issued a warning for local thunderstorm-like developments with gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour, heavy rain with up to 40 liters per square meter, and hail up to 2 centimeters in diameter.

It is expected to be humid with temperatures up to 31 degrees. On Thursday night, further showers and thunderstorms, as well as fog with visibilities under 150 meters, are possible.

On Thursday, it is expected to be a maximum of 29 degrees warm with a light wind, and again, thunderstorms and heavy rain are possible in the further course of the day. The weather is predicted to be changeable towards the weekend with summer temperatures just under 30 degrees.

  1. The heavy thunderstorm last night was reminiscent of a storm that hit Potsdam several days earlier, causing significant damage and requiring the assistance of the local fire department.
  2. After the thunderstorm, the DWD issued a new warning for Brandenburg, predicting another squall with heavy rain and gusts reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour.
  3. The fire department in Berlin advises locals to stay indoors during thunderstorms, as the sound of thunder and the sight of lightning can often be a sign of a fire starting.
  4. The start of the week in Berlin was dampened by the thunderstorm, but meteorologists at the DWD are predicting warmer temperatures towards the end of the week, with reaching up to 29 degrees.
  5. Despite the weather warning, many in Berlin and Potsdam chose to ignore the advice and enjoyed the rain, enjoying the break from the usual summer heat.
