Heavy rain causes problems for drivers in southern Germany
The Italian low pressure system reached Southern Germany and caused localized heavy rainfall and flooding. In several regions, highways were closed for hours and cars were towed away.
The A96 in the Landsberg am Lech district was flooded and had to be closed for several hours. At one point on Wednesday evening, the water reached knee-height on the road in the direction of Munich, as the police reported. Even after the rain had stopped, water flowed onto the road at the Schoeffelding interchange. One car got stuck in the water and had to be towed away.
There were also flooding issues on the road in the direction of Lindau, but traffic could still be rerouted to the shoulder. In total, there were significant traffic disruptions and a traffic jam of nearly eleven kilometers in that area.
Fire department personnel dealt with the drainage of the water. Afterward, the heavily soiled and muddy road was cleaned. The road was finally reopened around 11:00 pm on Wednesday.
In the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis in Baden-Wuerttemberg, roads were flooded due to a strong storm on Wednesday afternoon. Trees were uprooted. In Sinsheim-Steinfurt, the water reached approximately 50 centimeters in height in some streets. A truck driver got stuck trying to drive through the flooded road. The truck could not be driven again. The road had to be closed for approximately three hours.
On the road between Sinsheim and Sinsheim-Weiler, several trees fell onto the road due to the storm. In Eschelbronn, a lightning strike hit a house, but a fire did not break out, and no one was injured. The extent of the damage is currently unknown. Flooded roads were also reported in other places, such as Burgstetten in the Rems-Murr-Kreis.
The International Red Cross provided emergency aid and resources to affected communities in the face of the widespread flooding and storm damage. Due to the continued unfavorable weather conditions, travel advisories were issued for several European countries.
