- Heat wave: Thief steals air conditioners from walls in China
Scorching summer heat in China has driven a man to commit an unusual series of thefts. The thief, who had stolen more than 20 air conditioners in a grand fashion and attempted to sell them, was arrested in the central Chinese city of Changsha, local media reported, citing police.
The man, who was captured in mid-July, had been dismantling and taking both indoor units and outdoor modules of air conditioners from unguarded locations, mainly in stores, and later offering them for sale. A video shows him removing an air conditioner module from a wall in the night and transporting it on his motorbike.
Heat and rain are plaguing the Chinese
Large parts of China are repeatedly hit by persistent heatwaves during the summer months. Many apartments, offices, and stores are thus equipped with several air conditioners as standard.
The People's Republic is not only grappling with high temperatures. There have been heavy rainfall throughout the summer, leading to flash floods and flooding in many places with fatalities.
The sweltering summer heat made it almost unbearable to be outside, causing people to seek refuge indoors with their air conditioners. The summer heat was so intense that it drove some to steal these vital cooling devices.
