Netanyahu in the USA - Harris with clear commitment to Israel and warning

Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris made clear statements about Israel following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. At the same time, Harris urged the Israeli leadership to do more for the suffering population in the Gazastrip. "Israel has the right to defend itself, and it's important how it does so," said the 59-year-old.

In her conversation with Netanyahu, Harris expressed her "grave concern over the extent of human suffering in the Gazastrip." This includes the death of "too many innocent civilians" and the catastrophic humanitarian situation. "We cannot turn a blind eye to these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become insensitive in the face of suffering, and I will not be silent."

People in the U.S. were urged by Harris to keep in mind the complexity of the conflict and the history of the region. Terrorism and violence must be condemned, she said. "Let us all do what we can to prevent the suffering of innocent civilians. And let us condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, and hate of all kinds."

Thanks to the leadership of U.S. President Joe Biden, an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages is on the table, Harris continued. There are "promising developments in the talks," she said. "And as I told Prime Minister Netanyahu just now: It's time to bring this agreement to fruition."

Netanyahu had previously met with Biden. On Friday, Netanyahu is scheduled to meet Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Florida. The U.S. as Israel's most important ally have been pressing Israel for months to strengthen humanitarian aid in Gaza and improve the protection of the civilian population.
