Harris rejects Trump's terms

Kamala Harris challenges Donald Trump to a TV debate - on a long-standing date. The Republican hesitates at first. Then he agrees, but independently schedules a different date. The Democrat remains unimpressed and mocks Trump's inconsistency.

Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris are engaged in a public tussle over a date for a TV debate in the campaign. Trump announced on his online platform Truth Social that he had agreed with the TV network Fox News on a debate with Harris on September 4. Harris insists on a previously agreed date of September 10 with the network ABC.

Trump and the incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden had originally agreed on two TV debates, with the second scheduled for September 10. Biden's disastrous performance in the first TV debate against Trump at the end of June sparked the political avalanche that ultimately led to the Democrat's withdrawal from the presidential race and paved the way for Harris. The 59-year-old now wants to take Biden's place in the presidential election in early November against Trump.

The Republican Trump had complained about the sudden change in the Democrats and lamented that he had to completely rearrange his campaign. He also hesitated at first to agree to a debate with Harris instead of Biden. Now, however, he unexpectedly proposed a new date - and a new venue. He argued that he is involved in a legal dispute with the network ABC - Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against one of the ABC moderators. Therefore, there is a conflict of interest.

Harris remained unimpressed. She will appear at the debate on September 10, to which Trump has also agreed, she wrote on the platform X. "I hope to see him there." Harris also mocked Trump for first claiming to be ready for a debate at any time and place, but now suddenly only willing to go to a "safe place" at a specific time.

Donald Trump, following his announcement of a debate with Kamala Harris on September 4 on Truth Social, stated his disagreement with the originally agreed date of September 10 with ABC, citing a legal dispute with the network. Kamela Harris, in response, confirmed her participation in the September 10 debate on the platform X, expressing hope to see Donald Trump there.
