A Filipino seaman died during a fire on a container ship off the coast of India. The Hamburg-based shipping management company Bernhard Schulte (BSM) informed the German Press Agency (dpa) of this. The company did not provide information about the man's age. Several media outlets had reported on the incident earlier.
According to BSM, the ship was approximately 150 kilometers from the western coast of India when the fire broke out on Friday. The cause is unclear. The container ship "Maersk Frankfurt" was on its way from Mundra (India) to Colombo (Sri Lanka). The Danish shipping giant Maersk had chartered the 2024-built vessel.
A BSM spokesperson stated that there were no further injured individuals. The crew was reported to have consisted of a total of 21 members. The fire is under control; however, flames are still burning in some containers, the spokesperson added.
