Hackers paralyze Ukrainian mobile phone provider

An unprecedented attack has paralyzed Ukraine's largest mobile phone provider. "On the morning of December 12, the Kyivstar network was the target of a major hacker attack, which is the reason for the technical disruptions," the company announced on X. The police have been called in. The company assured that personal data did not fall into the hands of third parties.

Telephone and Internet connections in the provider's network failed nationwide. The company website was also unavailable. It is not yet clear when the mobile network will be up and running again, Kyivstar CEO Olexander Komarov announced via video. According to media reports, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Olexander Kubrakov had previously stated that he intended to rectify the network outage within the next few hours.

As an alternative, Kyivstar recommended that subscribers switch to the networks of other providers. After the Russian invasion over 21 months ago, a free transition was agreed between all Ukrainian mobile phone providers. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko also pointed to free Internet access in the warm-up points set up by the state. The origin of the hackers was initially unknown. According to media reports, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Olexander Kubrakov stated that he intended to rectify the network outage within the next few hours.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian internet bank Monobank also reportedly became the target of a hacker attack. The second largest mobile phone provider Vodafone also reported technical problems. Kyivstar claims to have a good 24 million subscribers. In November, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo joined the mobile phone company's supervisory board.
