Curious dispute in Bavaria - Guest pays for 16 beers individually with EC card - landlord calls police
In a tavern in Mamming, Niederbayern, a 21-year-old guest ordered and paid for 16 beers individually with his EC card. The innkeeper was so annoyed by this that he called the police, as they reported. The reason for his anger: he had to pay transaction fees of around 20 cents for each transaction, the innkeeper told the officers. The guest from Latvia had no understanding for the innkeeper's anger and was also uncooperative with the police, it was reported. The outcome of the story: The disgraced guest was expelled from the tavern and received a ban.
EC card payment is not mandatory in Germany
It was unclear whether the man had drunk the 16 beers himself or ordered them for other guests. In Germany, there is no obligation to accept EC card payment. As reported by BR, which also reported on the incident, it is quite common and sometimes desired in the man's native Latvia to pay even small amounts with a card. In Germany, cash still holds a higher value, although digital payment is reportedly on the rise in a recent survey. In various media and social media contributions, it was read that foreign visitors to the European Championship in Germany were wondering about the sometimes lacking possibilities of EC card payment.

- Despite the incident at the colorful tavern in Bavaria, some visitors at the European Championship were puzzled by the limited acceptance of EC cards in certain establishments.
- If the Latvian guest had known about the higher value of cash in Germany, he might have chosen to pay for his 16 beers in a more cost-effective way.
- Upon returning home, the guest may have shared his story with fellow countryfolk, furthering the perception that some European taverns, like the one in Mamming, are less receptive to digital payments.
