In Germany, a growing number of private households use air conditioning to cool their homes in the summer. According to a survey conducted by comparison portal Verivox, 19 percent of people in Germany stated that they cool their flat or house with such a system. This was only 13 percent a year ago, as stated in a press release on Thursday. A majority of 81 percent of the interviewees reportedly do not yet own an air conditioning system. However, 19 percent plan to purchase one.

For the survey commissioned by Verivox, it appears that 1023 people between the ages of 18 and 79 were interviewed in June. For most people with purchasing intentions, the reason given was the impact of climate change. 53 percent stated that they wanted to prepare for warmer summers in the future. This also applied to many people who at least partially work from home.

The most common reason for not buying, according to the interviewees, was the high acquisition and operating costs. This was stated by 49 percent of the respondents. Forty-five percent reportedly cool their homes with fans instead. However, only 23 percent of the interviewees considered the environmental impact of the systems to be a significant factor.

  1. The Survey conducted by Verivox revealed that while a growing number of private households in Germany are embracing air conditioners, 81 percent of the interviewees still do not own one, with the primary reason being the high acquisition and operating costs.
  2. The survey also indicated that among those planning to purchase an air conditioner, 53 percent cited the impact of climate change as the main motivator, with many also mentioning their intention to prepare for warmer summers in future.
