Greta Thunberg accuses Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip
Climate activist Greta Thunberg and other members of the Swedish branch of the climate protection group Fridays for Future have accused Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip. Thunberg and five other signatories wrote in an opinion piece published in the newspapers "Aftonbladet" (Sweden) and "Guardian" (UK) on Tuesday that the Islamist Hamas, which rules Gaza, "murdered Israeli civilians in a horrific attack" cannot legitimize Israel's "ongoing war crimes". "Committing genocide is neither self-defense nor in any way proportionate," they wrote.
Thunberg and her co-authors emphasized that they were only speaking on behalf of Fridays for Future in Sweden. The organization has always spoken out when people suffer or are killed, whether in Kurdistan or Ukraine, and will not remain silent now. They referred to the Israeli historian Ras Segal, who described Israel's actions in Gaza as "textbook genocide" just a few days after the conflict began.
At the same time, the group condemned anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents in Sweden. "Everyone involved in this debate has a responsibility to distinguish between Hamas, Muslims and Palestinians, just as the Israeli state should be distinguished from the Jewish people and Israelis," they wrote.

Thunberg's controversial opinion piece, co-authored by fellow Fridays for Future members, labeled Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip as genocide, drawing parallels to the description given by Israeli historian Ras Segal. This assertion, however, sparked a call to distinguish between Hamas, Muslims, and Palestinians, as well as the Israeli state, Jews, and Israelis, to avoid fueling anti-Semitic or Islamophobic sentiments in Sweden.
