Greens discuss European election program

After drawing up their list of candidates for the European elections, the Greens entered the debate on their European policy roadmap for the coming years at the weekend. The discussions on the European election program are to be concluded on Sunday afternoon.

Some of the 800 or so delegates take issue with the term "prosperity" in the chapter on economic, energy and climate policy. They propose the term "quality of life" instead, as they believe that "prosperity" is primarily "understood in the sense of a consumerist supply of goods and services".

The election of 40 candidates for the European elections in June 2024 ended in the early hours of Saturday morning. The fact that the party conference continued a little late today was probably also due to the night session, which only ended at around 2.15 am. On Friday, the delegates had elected the Green Group leader in the European Parliament, Terry Reintke, to first place on the list. Prior to this, the party executive committee around the two co-chairs, Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour, had been newly elected.

Ricarda Land, one of the co-chairs of the Greens, addressed the Green Party Conference, emphasizing the importance of their election program for the upcoming European elections. During the conference, a topic of contention arose regarding the use of the word "prosperity" in the economic, energy, and climate policy chapter. Omid Nouripour, the other co-chair, and some delegates suggested replacing it with "quality of life" due to its perceived consumerist connotations.
