Criminality - Görlitz Police warn of scam with printed books and dictionaries

The police in Eastern Saxony are warning about a scam involving expensive-looking bookprints and lexicas. According to a statement by the authorities, in Görlitz there has recently been an increase in trade with supposedly valuable bookprints and lexicas. The criminals present themselves as book dealers or sales representatives. They then call the owners of Brockhaus- or Bertelsmann-Lexica collections specifically and pretend to want to buy the collections. However, the owners of the lexicas must first purchase particularly valuable supplementary binders, often for five-figure Euro prices.

These are reportedly very elaborate in design and sometimes adorned with gemstones - in reality, however, they are worthless. During appraisal appointments, the elderly people are then put under heavy pressure and forced to sign overpriced credit agreements for financing the supplementary binders. High "service fees" are often demanded from the authorities.

  1. The rise in criminality surrounding expensive bookprints and lexicas in Saxony has led to concerns among the East Saxons.
  2. The local police in Görlitz are currently investigating several cases of deception involving book dealers who claim to be interested in purchasing high-value Brockhaus- or Bertelsmann-Lexica collections.
  3. The use of a dictionary or thesaurus could potentially help individuals identify the true value of these supposedly valuable bookprints and lexicas to avoid falling victim to such scams.
  4. Some printers in Saxony have also reported receiving orders to create fake, overpriced supplementary binders for these book collections, contributing to the spread of this criminal activity in the region.
