Google is ahead of Apple with a powerful Pixel fleet

This year, Google is presenting its Pixel smartphones not after, but before Apple. Four new devices are rolling off the line, including a foldable. Alongside them are a Pixel Watch in two sizes, improved earbuds, and new AI features.

Instead of presenting them in October after the big iPhone event, Google is presenting its new smartphones this year in mid-August. The Pixel 9 comes in three variants, including a Pro-XL model for the first time. Accompanying the trio is the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the Pixel Watch 3 in two sizes, and the Pixel Buds Pro 2. Alongside these devices, Google is introducing new AI features that are meant to outshine Apple's Intelligence - but only if you're willing to sign up for a subscription.

Pixel 9

Google has revised the design of the smartphones. The distinctive camera bar no longer reaches the frame but now forms a pill-shaped unit. Glossy glass on the back is a thing of the past, all models now have smooth, matte surfaces that are less prone to fingerprints.

The Pixel 9, which is dust and water-resistant to IP68, has a 6.3-inch display that is not only 0.1 inches larger than its predecessor but can also shine 35 percent brighter, according to Google. It has a very sharp resolution of 422 pixels per inch (ppi) and offers refresh rates of 60 to 120 Hertz (Hz).

The device is powered by Google's new Tensor G4 chip, like all other 9 series. It has 12GB of RAM and flash storage that is either 128 or 256GB in size. The battery is 4700mAh, which, combined with its more power-efficient processor, should allow the Pixel 9 to last about 20 percent longer than its predecessor.

The Pixel 9 also comes in Pink.

The ultra-wide camera now has 48 megapixels instead of 12, and the 50MP main camera has been carried over unchanged. The 10.5MP front camera now has autofocus instead of fixed focus.

The Pixel 9 costs around 900 euros with 128GB and 1000 euros with 256GB. It will receive seven years of operating system updates and security updates.

Pixel 9 Pro (XL)

For the first time, Google is offering the Pro variant in two different sizes. One variant has a 6.3-inch display like the standard device, but it offers refresh rates of 1 to 120 Hz and has a higher pixel density of 495 ppi. The Pixel 9 Pro XL has a 6.8-inch display with 486 ppi.

The smaller Pro has a 4700mAh battery like the regular 9, while the XL smartphone has a capacity of 5060mAh. In addition to variants with 128, 256, and 512GB, the larger Pro also comes in a model with 1TB of flash storage. Otherwise, the specifications of the two flagship devices are identical, including a 16GB RAM.

The Pixel Pro and Pro XL differ mainly in size.

The camera setup on the back is almost unchanged from the Pixel 8 Pro. The main and ultra-wide cameras are supplemented by a 48MP telephoto camera with an f/2.8 aperture and 5x optical zoom.

Google wants around 1100 euros for the Pixel 9 Pro with 128GB, while the variants with 256 and 512GB cost 1200 and 1330 euros.

Finally, Google has introduced its second foldable smartphone, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It boasts larger displays than its predecessor, measuring 8 and 6.3 inches inside and out, compared to the previous model's 7.6 and 5.8 inches. However, it's only slightly taller when unfolded, at 155.2 mm, and even slightly narrower and thinner when closed, at 77.1 and 10.5 mm. When unfolded, the Pixel Pro Fold measures 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.1 mm.

The inner display is sharp at 373 ppi, supports refresh rates from 1 to 120 Hz, and can get 80% brighter than the first Fold. The outer screen is equally bright, with 422 ppi and refresh rates of 60 to 120 Hz.

The rear triple camera is now housed in a split unit instead of a wide bar. Otherwise, the specs remain largely unchanged. The main camera (f/1.7) shoots at 48 MP, the ultra-wide camera (f/2.2) at 10.5 MP, and the telephoto camera (f/3.1) with 5x optical zoom offers 10.8 MP. There's also a front camera and an inner camera, both with f/2.2 aperture and 10 MP sensors.

According to Google, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold currently has the largest smartphone screen.

Like the other two 9 Pro smartphones, the new Fold is powered by the Tensor G4 and has 16 GB of RAM. The battery, at 4650 mAh, has slightly less capacity than its predecessor, but the device is expected to last just as long.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes in two variants. The 256 GB flash storage model is priced at around €1900, while the 512 GB version costs €2030.

Gemini takes over

All four Pixel 9 devices come with new AI features, handled by Google's ChatGPT alternative, Gemini, instead of the Google Assistant. Among other things, these models can create a personalized weather report and allow the photographer to be included in group photos.

The best AI experience is offered by Gemini Live, which promises "seamless conversation" with the assistant. It can help with party planning or household repairs, based on information from Google Apps. However, Gemini Live is currently only available in English and requires a paid Advanced subscription, costing €22 per month after a free trial.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 should be smaller, yet better.

Pixel Buds Pro 2

To communicate with Gemini, users can also use the new Pixel Buds Pro 2 earbuds. Google has reduced their size by 27% compared to previous models, yet they can last up to 8 hours with ANC activated without a charging case. A rotating stabilizer ensures a secure fit during sports or daily use.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are said to sound better and offer more effective ANC thanks to the new Tensor-1 chip. The processor also enables "crystal-clear calls" and automatically pauses music playback and activates transparency mode when speaking.

Pixel Watch 3

For the first time, the Pixel Watch is available in a duo, with models featuring 41 mm or 45 mm displays. The screens have narrower bezels than the Watch 2 and can get twice as bright. With the always-on display activated, the duo can last up to 24 hours.

Many users desired a Pixel Watch with a larger display.

At night, the watch can detect when you've fallen asleep and automatically turn off the screen along with notifications. Additionally, the new smartwatches bring new or improved fitness and health features.

The Pixel Watch 3 with a 41mm display costs around 400 euros, and the LTE version is 500 euros. For the 45mm screen version, you'll need to invest 450 or 550 euros.

Despite the Commission's earlier recommendations, Google is introducing its new Pixel features earlier in the year. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, along with its AI features powered by Gemini, is a testament to Google's willingness to Innovate independently.

The new Pixel Buds Pro 2 are designed to enhance your Gemini experience, offering improved sound quality and battery life, making communication with your AI assistant more seamless.
