GMX and web.de continue to have the highest market share in Germany

In Germany, email providers GMX and web.de continue to dominate the market. While GMX was in the lead this year with a stable market share of 25.7 percent, web.de lost a good three points and is now in second place with 23.1 percent, according to a recent study by consulting firm Convios. As in previous years, Gmail is in third place.

According to the survey, which was made available to AFP on Wednesday, Gmail, the email service of the US company Google, lost market share slightly and is now at 15.1 percent. It is followed by t-online (8.8 percent), Outlook (8.0 percent) and Yahoo (4.3 percent). GMX and web.de both belong to the United Internet company.

According to the survey, e-mail is by far the most popular communication channel for business matters. 73.9 percent of respondents prefer to communicate with companies by e-mail, 32.9 percent by telephone and 17.0 percent by letter. Messenger and social networks were mentioned less frequently. Multiple answers were possible.

When shopping online, hardly anyone sees SMS or services such as Whatsapp as an alternative for receiving order confirmations or shipping notifications. Most consumers also rely on their email inbox for invoices, contract information and the like.

According to Convios, the study has been conducted regularly since 2009 on behalf of GMX and web.de. For the current study, 1004 Internet users aged 16 and over were surveyed online in September and October.
