Giuliani is no longer allowed to work as a lawyer
Rudy Giuliani is one of the central figures in former President Trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He has made repeatedly demonstrable false statements about the election Trump lost. Now, a court in New York is taking action: The 80-year-old is losing his attorney license.
The former attorney for ex-US President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, has lost his attorney license in New York due to repeated false statements about the election Trump lost. A appeals court in New York upheld the revocation of his license.
The former mayor of New York City had "repeatedly and deliberately made false statements" about the election and "baselessly attacked the integrity of the electoral process of this state," the court declared. Giuliani not only "deliberately violated some of the most fundamental principles of the legal profession," but also "actively" contributed to the post-election disputes in November 2020, the court added. Giuliani showed no remorse for his actions.
Giuliani was a central figure in Trump's efforts to overturn the election results through baseless fraud allegations after Trump's electoral defeat against the current President Joe Biden. In addition to Trump, Giuliani is facing a range of legal issues.
For Trump opponents, he is a figure of fun
Thus, the 80-year-old was charged with manipulation of the election in a criminal case in Atlanta, Georgia. He also has to answer for allegations of election manipulation in Arizona in court. His attorney license was suspended in Washington, D.C., as well as in New York, due to his false statements about the election. In December, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy in a New York court and requested creditor protection after being ordered to pay over a million dollars in damages for defamation by two former election workers from Georgia.
In the past, Giuliani was highly respected across party lines. He was dubbed "America's Mayor" by talk show host Oprah Winfrey due to his composed reaction to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, in New York. Later, Giuliani became a loyal and often aggressive ally of Trump - for Trump's opposition, he has been a figure of fun ever since.
Giuliani's legal troubles extend beyond New York, as he also faces charges of election manipulation in Atlanta, Georgia, and has allegations to answer in Arizona. Despite his previous respected status, particularly after his response to the 9/11 attacks, Trump's former attorney is now viewed as a source of amusement by his opponents.
In the aftermath of Trump's electoral defeat against President Joe Biden, Giuliani became a key figure in the former president's attempts to overturn the election results through baseless fraud allegations.
