A 13-year-old girl was severely injured when she climbed onto a train at a cargo station in Schwerte, North Rhine-Westphalia, after coming into contact with an electrical current, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Police.

The girl is reportedly in a very critical condition, according to the police spokesperson. However, they added that they would handle future statements regarding her health status sensitively in the coming days.

Preliminary police findings suggest that the girl had climbed onto the train for video recordings. She reportedly touched the overhead power line and suffered an electrical shock and severe burns as a result. The girl was also thrown several meters through the air.

Rescue forces in North Rhine-Westphalia in action

A German Rail employee noticed the incident and initiated the emergency response. A 15-year-old companion of the girl provided first aid. The girl was flown to a specialist clinic on a helicopter on Monday.

According to current knowledge, the girl was with five other teenagers aged between 14 and 16 at the cargo station. The other teenagers were heavily affected by shock and were psychologically supported by the fire department, the Federal Police reported.
