Girl drowned in the Elbe
Rescue teams still cling to hope: A girl goes under in the Elbe in the afternoon. Since then, firefighters and DLRG have been in full operation. Due to the current, the search radius is constantly increasing.
In Hamburg-Blankenese, there has been a major operation involving rescue services after a child drowned in the Elbe. The fire department assumes that the girl has drowned - in front of her parents' eyes. The incident occurred "in sight," a fire department spokesperson said.
With a large contingent, rescue services searched for the child. Hope has not been abandoned yet, the spokesperson said. Sometimes, people can be revived due to the relatively cold water, he added. A rescue helicopter was circling over the Elbe.
The police were alerted around 15:50 that a child was in danger of drowning in the Elbe. Around 40 personnel from the fire department and DLRG searched the area around the incident site at the Falkensteiner Ufer. Due to the Elbe's current, the search radius was expanded to 400 to 500 meters, the fire department spokesperson said. Firefighters and DLRG were in operation with boats, and sonar divers were also searching for the child.
A rescue helicopter was circling over the Elbe, and a drone was also in use. The age of the missing girl was not disclosed by the fire department spokesperson. The child's parents are being cared for by the pastoral care emergency service.
Despite the expanding search radius due to the Elbe's current, rescue efforts to locate the girl continue diligently. Regrettably, several bathing accidents have occurred in the area over the past few weeks, highlighting the need for increased safety measures.
