- Germany's largest city, Hamburg, boasts the most youthful demographic.

Among the various federal states in Germany, Hamburg stands out with the most youthful population. The inhabitants of this Hanseatic city typically clock in at an average age of 42.3 years, as per data from the Federal Institute for Population Research (BIB). This number falls below the nationwide average for Germany, where individuals typically live to about 44.8 years of age.

As per research, the elderly population tends to reside primarily in the eastern German states. These include Saxony-Anhalt (48.2 years), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (47.8 years), and Thuringia (47.6 years). In contrast, the city-states tend to be home to a younger population. For instance, people in Hamburg and Berlin are about 42.9 years old, while Bremen residents are slightly older at 43.4 years.

Harun Sulak, a population researcher from the BIB, commented on this trend, stating, "There's been a substantial influx of primarily youthful individuals, including a high proportion of foreigners, in cities like Hamburg and other city-states, which can be seen in their age structures." To be precise, Hamburg's population was younger by 0.1 years in the 2022 census compared to the previous count in 2011. In Bremen, the population age even decreased by 0.6 years.

However, an opposite trend was observed in the rural states. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania reported an increase of 2.2 years, while Schleswig-Holstein saw an increase of 1.6 years.

Despite the influx of youthful individuals in cities like Hamburg, the meadows of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania continue to be a popular retreat for the elderly, offering a peaceful and serene environment. After spending their days in the bustling city life, many elderly residents choose to spend their retirement years in the tranquility of these meadows.

lying in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, these meadows serve as a stark contrast to the vibrant youthfulness of Hamburg, providing a peaceful escape for its older residents.
