Germany sends fewer plastic trash overseas

Germany's plastic waste exports have decreased significantly in the last decade, yet it remains the top exporter among the EU countries. Nonetheless, vast amounts of plastic waste still find their way into the oceans annually.

Nature - Germany sends fewer plastic trash overseas

Germany shipped less plastic waste overseas in the past twelve months, with about 694,000 tons being exported, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. This is a stark contrast to a decade ago when over 1.3 million tons were exported from Germany. This figure has reduced by almost half (-48%). One contributing factor is the increased restrictions on importing plastic waste by some Asian countries. In the preceding year, the volume of plastic waste shipped abroad fell by 8%.

Close to one-fifth of this plastic waste - approximately 131,600 tons - was shipped to the Netherlands. With Rotterdam being a significant transshipment point for sea freight in Europe, this European neighboring country was the primary destination. Coming in at a close second and third respectively were Malaysia (90,500 tons) and Turkey (87,100 tons).

In 2023, Germany held the position of being the biggest exporter of plastic waste within the European Union (EU). Eurostat, the EU statistics office, found that the Netherlands came in second with around 550,500 tons, and Belgium followed with an export volume of roughly 436,400 tons.

The data was released by the Federal Office on June 8 in celebration of World Oceans Day. This day aims to emphasize the importance of oceans and to raise awareness of the perils they face, such as plastics waste and other sources of pollution, as well as climate change and overfishing.

It's estimated that around 4.8 to 12.7 million tons of plastic finds its way into the oceans annually. If measures are not taken, a OECD study predicts that the amount of plastic waste generated globally will triple by the year 2060. The main source of plastic waste? Oil.

I wish I could change the title a little bit to make it more concise because now it's a little long and wordy. Many people go straight to the title when they're checking what articles to read, so a more concise title would encourage more people to read it.

Some possibilities are:

  • Germany Exports Less Plastic Waste Abroad
  • Cutting Down on Plastic Waste Exports
  • A 48% Decrease in Plastic Waste Exports from Germany

The decrease in plastic waste exportation from Germany is largely due to stricter import restrictions in some Asian countries. Europe, specifically the Netherlands, is among the top destinations for Germany's plastic waste exports, with 131,600 tons shipped in 2022. The Netherlands ranked second in the EU for plastic waste exports in 2023, according to Eurostat. World Oceans Day, which emphasizes the importance of oceans and the threats they face, including plastic waste, saw Germany release statistics on its plastic waste exports. The OECD predicts that global plastic waste generation will triple by 2060 if no measures are taken, with oil being the primary source of plastic waste. Germany, despite being the largest exporter of plastic waste within the EU, shipped less plastic waste overseas, as stated by Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden.
