Germany consumes significantly more packaging waste per capita than the EU average

Germany consumed significantly more packaging waste per capita in 2021 than the European average. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 237 kilograms of plastic, paper and glass packaging was generated per capita in Germany. The EU average was just under 189 kilograms.

According to the figures, the per capita quantity in Germany has risen by 26 percent since 2005. In the EU as a whole, it has increased by just under a fifth (19 percent) in the same period. According to the statisticians, not only waste from private households is recorded, but also the total amount of packaging waste generated in a country.

Germany is in first place in terms of absolute waste volume. In 2021, a total of 19.7 million tons were generated, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Germany came second in terms of waste per capita. Ireland leads the rankings with 246 kilograms per capita.
