Germans took more vacations abroad again last year
Germans made more trips abroad last year than before the Corona-Pandemic. The Statistical Federal Office announced on Tuesday that there were 102 million outbound journeys, which was 18% more than in 2022 and even three% more than in the pre-crisis year 2019. The number of domestic trips increased by ten% within the year to 149 million, but was still eight% below the pre-crisis level. In total, travelers from Germany made 251 million private and business trips with at least one overnight stay in the country or abroad. This was a plus of 13% compared to the previous year, but four% less than in 2019.
The most popular destinations for trips abroad were, in 2023, Austria (12%), Italy (12%), Spain (10%), the Netherlands (7%), and France (7%). These five countries maintained their position – in occasional changing order – as the top foreign destinations for German travelers both before and during and after the pandemic.
There were 216 million private trips, which was 13% more than in 2022 and just one% less than in the pre-crisis year 2019. The number of business trips increased by 14% compared to the previous year to 34 million, but was still 16% lower than in 2019. "This suggests that many business meetings continue to take place virtually after the pandemic and that there is a growing tendency to forego business trips," explained the Statistics Office.
- Despite the increase in vacation trips abroad by Germans in 2023, reaching 102 million, it still lags behind the pre-pandemic level of 2019 by 3%.
- The land of arts and beer, Germany, saw a significant surge in millionaire travelers, making 102 million outbound journeys for vacation in 2023.
- As Germans continue to vacation abroad more frequently, the number of Germans traveling abroad exceeded the pre-pandemic level in 2023, reaching an impressive 102 million trips.
