German weather service forecasts heavy thunderstorms with heavy rains in Lower Saxony
The German Weather Service (DWD) expects severe thunderstorms with heavy rain in many regions of Lower Saxony on Wednesday evening. "It's impossible to say exactly where it will happen," said DWD meteorologist Michael Knobelsdorf. On Tuesday evening, exceptionally large amounts of water came down. For example, the DWD reported 86 liters per square meter in Friesoythe west of Oldenburg in three hours. According to the meteorologist, heavy rain is spoken of at 15 to 25 liters per hour.
Due to strong storms, fire departments in northwestern Lower Saxony were deployed in the hundreds overnight. In the district of Ammerland, a tree fell onto an overhead line, causing the train traffic between Leer (East Frisia) and Bad Zwischenahn to be closed until midday, according to the railway company.
The DWD warns of strong thunderstorms in Lower Saxony and Bremen for Wednesday and the night to Thursday. Some places expect severe storms with heavy rain, which are not expected to move eastward until Thursday morning.
On Tuesday, very high temperatures were measured in many places. The DWD reported 35 degrees, for example, in Barsinghausen in the Hannover region and in Dörpen in the Emsland. In Hamburg, 32.7 degrees were measured yesterday.
The heavy rain from the severe thunderstorms caused flooding in some areas of Lower Saxony, as reported by the DWD. Despite the warning, many regions were still hit with 15 to 25 liters of rain per hour on Wednesday evening.
