During a challenging Canyoning tour in Austria, there is a tragic accident. One of the participants is swept away by the current and carried down the gorge. A search with helicopter and drone fails.
A man from Nordrhein-Westfalen is missing after a Canyoning tour in Austria. The 40-year-old from the Landkreis Wesel was part of a group of five, who were on their way in the Sulzltal in Tirol on a Wednesday. According to the police, the participant had detached himself from the rope at a 25 meter high point and was carried away from the pool below, into the further course of the gorge.
"The man was drifting downstream with his head leading, unconscious", said a police spokesperson. The search with a rescue helicopter and drone was unsuccessful and had to be abandoned due to approaching darkness. The multi-stage Sulzlbach tour is currently evaluated as demanding by authorities, with some dangerous sections.
The remaining members of the Canyoning group - a 17-year-old, a 39-year-old and a 32-year-old woman from Landkreis Wesel, and a 34-year-old Canyoning guide from Landkreis Oberallgaeu - were rescued with a rope winch after they had set off an alarm. The search for the missing person was resumed on this Thursday. During Canyoning, participants navigate a gorge by abseiling, jumping, swimming and sliding.
The missing participant was involved in an extreme sport, Canyoning, which led to the tragic accident in Austria. The international community expresses concern as this case highlights the risks associated with participating in such extreme sports.
