A German hiker has died while ascending the 2,502-meter-high Säntis in eastern Switzerland. The man, who was from Lower Saxony and lived in Switzerland, slipped and fell several meters in steep terrain on Saturday morning while hiking alone to the peak. Mountain rescuers and high-altitude workers, who were dismantling a large Swiss flag on the Säntis after the Swiss National Day on August 1st, rushed to the scene.

First aid was administered, but the hiker could not be saved. The body was flown down to the valley by the air rescue service.

The exact circumstances of the accident on the challenging hiking route are still being investigated. According to the police spokesman, it had rained the night before, making the rocks very slippery.

The hiker's unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday, but he was unable to continue his hike to reach the Säntis summit on Sunday. Despite the efforts of rescuers, the weather conditions from the previous night, with its heavy rain making the rocks slippery, proved fatal.
