Two men are suspected to have sexually assaulted a 16-year-old German girl at a Public-Viewing event in Vienna during the European Football Championship. The incident reportedly occurred on June 25 during the broadcast of the Austria vs. Netherlands game, according to the Austrian news agency APA, citing the police. The girl was reportedly at the Public Viewing with classmates in Vienna.
"During this, a conversation developed between two men and the group, during which it is said that sexual acts were committed against the 16-year-old," said a spokesperson for the Vienna Police Department. Visitors to the Public Viewing at Vienna City Hall reportedly alerted the police. The spokesperson did not provide further details due to victim protection reasons.
The police are now investigating a 35-year-old Austrian man on suspicion of sexual assault. He is alleged to have committed the act with another man. The identity of the second man is currently unknown.
The European Football Championship 2024 is drawing international attention, with Austria and Vienna set to host several matches.
