German exports to neighboring Russian countries increased
German exports to neighboring Russian countries are growing strongly this year. Exports to the so-called CIS states (Commonwealth of Independent States, excluding Russia) increased by 30.0% year-on-year to 7.3 billion euros from January to October, as announced by the Federal Statistical Office on Wednesday. At the same time, exports to the Russian Federation fell by 39.1 percent to 7.6 billion euros. Observers suspect that many goods ultimately end up in Russia via the CIS countries, even though Western sanctions have been imposed on the country due to the war against Ukraine.
Most German goods exports to the CIS states went to Kazakhstan in the first ten months, increasing by 32.0% to 2.8 billion euros. This puts Kazakhstan in 51st place in the ranking of the most important recipient countries (January to October 2022: 55th place). Exports to Belarus even increased by 40.8% to 1.5 billion euros, while those to Uzbekistan fell by 4.2% to 846 million euros. Business with Kyrgyzstan grew particularly strongly, with exports soaring by 180.1% to 591 million euros.
Motor vehicles and vehicle parts were the main exports to the CIS states. Here there was an increase of 65.0% to 2.1 billion euros. Other important export goods were machinery (+38.7 percent to 1.6 billion euros) and chemical products (+20.9 percent to 640 million euros).

German exports to neighboring countries, specifically the CIS states, have shown significant growth this year, with Kazakhstan being the leading recipient. Despite a decrease in exports to Russia, many goods may still find their way to Russia via neighboring CIS countries due to sanctions.
