German Development Minister pledges to help Jordan with refugee care
The trip is taking place against the backdrop of the war between the radical Islamic group Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Israel. Jordan has traditionally played a mediating role in the Middle East conflict. Jordan's humanitarian and political commitment is "central to peace in the Middle East", explained Schulze. The country's role as a mediator is "invaluable".
According to her ministry, the Zaatari refugee camp, which Schulze visited, is one of the largest in the Middle East. Refugees from Syria are housed in the camp. With German support, the world's largest solar plant was built in a refugee camp in Zaatari.
Germany is also helping Jordan to provide for refugees and host communities in the areas of education, vocational training and basic municipal services such as waste disposal and water supply.
Schulze, the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, acknowledged Jordan's crucial role in refugee care, highlighting that their humanitarian and political commitment is essentially important for peace in the Middle East. Germany, in its efforts to support Jordan, has helped construct the world's largest solar plant in the Zaatari refugee camp, a project housing millions of Syrian refugees, which is one of the largest camps in the Middle East. The German development minister pledged additional assistance in the domains of education, vocational training, and essential municipal services like waste disposal and water supply, committing a substantial amount in Euros to aid Jordan's refugee care.
