Georgia student concealed an AR-15 weapon within his backpack and departed from his educational session prior to the lethal outburst.
The disclosure aligns with earlier student reports that Gray abandoned his Algebra 1 lesson on September 4, preceding the most lethal US school shooting this year, which occurred in Winder, Georgia.
As per the FBI's announcement yesterday, Gray carried the firearm into the school personally and concealed the semi-automatic weapon, which couldn't be disassembled, within his backpack.
Gray requested permission from a teacher to visit the front office and speak to someone. Subsequently, the teacher granted him permission to leave and collect his belongings. Gray then proceeded to the restroom to avoid detection by teachers. Later in the day, he retrieved the weapon and initiated a shooting spree.
GOP Advocates for Gun Safety Measures
As of today, there have been a staggering 389 mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The term 'mass shootings' is used for incidents involving four or more casualties. This equates to more than 1.5 mass shootings each day.
Following the events at Apalachee High School, Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns urged for enhanced gun safety and mental health measures in a letter to his fellow Republican colleagues.
Burns wrote, "We acknowledge that a lapse in communication led to the gunman's past being overlooked upon his transition to Apalachee High School." He proposed empowering schools with the necessary resources to facilitate mental health intervention for students in need.
Burns pledged to reintroduce legislation promoting safe gun storage and encouraging gun safety training. He also suggested exploring advanced technologies to identify firearms outside school premises and expanding mental health care access across the state.
Burns' proposition coincided with Democratic state leaders, such as Senate Minority Leader Gloria Butler, along with gun violence survivors, who converged at the Georgia State Capitol yesterday, advocating for gun safety regulations, including secure storage measures and 'red-flag laws'.
This story is still unfolding and will be updated accordingly.
