George Floyd case: Ex-policeman injured in prison

The former police officer who was sentenced to a long prison term for the murder of African-American George Floyd was attacked with a knife and seriously injured in prison.

This was reported by several US media outlets, citing people familiar with the matter. Derek Chauvin, the white ex-policeman from Minneapolis, is in a stable condition after the attack in a federal prison in the US state of Arizona, they added.

In May 2020, George Floyd was killed in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis. Videos documented how police officers pushed the unarmed man to the ground. The white officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for a good nine minutes while he begged to let him breathe.

Prison staff initiated life-saving measures

At the time, the case led to nationwide protests against police violence and racism. Chauvin was later sentenced to more than two decades in prison for murder. A few days ago, the Supreme Court rejected Chauvin's appeal. Chauvin had argued that he had not received a fair trial.

The prison authorities also announced that a prisoner had been assaulted in Tucson prison. According to sources from CNN and the New York Times, it was Chauvin. According to the authorities, prison staff provided life-saving measures. The person requiring treatment was then taken to hospital. Employees were not injured in the incident.

No further details were given about the inmate's condition, but one of the people familiar with the incident said that Chauvin survived the attack, according to the New York Times.
