Parties - GDR civil rights activist Lengsfeld has left the CDU
After many years, former GDR civil rights activist Vera Lengsfeld is no longer a member of the CDU. She declared her resignation from the party on Thursday, the 71-year-old said on request. She ruled out membership of another party. "I also think the party system is outdated," said Lengsfeld. The "Thüringer Allgemeine" had previously reported on the resignation.
Lengsfeld once sat in the Bundestag, initially for the Greens and later for the CDU. Most recently, she has mainly appeared as a critic of Germany's immigration policy.
"I have been very critical of the CDU since Merkel's time and had hoped that the course would be corrected, but I don't see that happening," said Lengsfeld, explaining her decision to leave. She will support her son's campaign for an independent list with the working title "Alliance for Europe", but will not stand in next year's EU parliamentary elections herself. She also stated on her website that she supports an alliance of various small parties in Thuringia that would like to stand in the 2024 state elections with its own list.
