Police - Gas explodes - residential building roof lifts off

In a gas explosion in Stuttgart, the roof of a residential building was lifted. Apparently, the improper handling of a gas cylinder was the cause, as the police reported. A resident was taken to the hospital with light injuries, while four others remained unharmed.

According to initial investigations, the gas was leaking from the cylinder and spread throughout the apartment. The mixture exploded in the night to Tuesday. Why exactly the gas leaked out needs to be determined, said a police spokesperson.

According to the fire department, the roof of the building was lifted by the explosion and then sank back down. Damages have occurred in the building, as a spokesperson for the fire department stated. The building has been evacuated. A structural engineer needs to examine it now. Preliminary estimates put the damage at several hundred thousand Euros.

The fire department was called from Baden-Württemberg to assist in Stuttgart due to the gas explosion. The fire department spokesperson mentioned that the emergency services used special equipment to contain the situation. During the incident, a cartridge from the gas cylinder was found scattered in the aftermath.
