Gang of youngsters allegedly schemed to carry out a hate crime against Jews.
In the last few months, France has witnessed a spike in violent acts by the youth. Most recently, a horrifying incident involved a 12-year-old girl being raped, stirring nation-wide shock. Currently, a 19-year-old individual is under police custody, accused of hatching plans to target Jewish establishments, alongside a minor who was earlier arrested.
It was reported by AFP that this 19-year-old, and the previously detained minor, were plotting a violent act. The older suspect is facing charges for forming a criminal association with the intention to commit a terrorist act and possessing weapons.
The minor was apparently apprehended on June 13. Both suspects are said to have been in contact through online platforms. The counter-terrorism division of the public prosecutor's office is now overseeing the investigation. France has experienced numerous acts of violence by young offenders in recent times. Antiterror investigator Olivier Christen expressed concerns regarding this disturbing trend on Wednesday.
This week, a 12-year-old girl in France was subjected to both rape and antisemitic slurs. Three boys are believed to be involved. Two 13-year-olds, charged with the rape and insulting the girl, are currently in police custody. The third 12-year-old suspect, who isn't directly linked to the rape, is being treated in a rehabilitation center.
