Arrest - Fugitive killer in Southeastern Europe arrested
Nine months after his escape from the correctional facility in Bruchsal, a convicted murderer was arrested in Karlsruhe, Germany. The man had eluded authorities in the southeastern European republic of Moldavia, according to the Baden-Württemberg Justice Ministry. A coordinated operation in the capital Chisinau was successful. The 44-year-old man had escaped during a monitored exit from a quarry lake in Germersheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, and fled into an adjacent forest. He had been accompanied by two correctional facility employees. His electronic ankle monitor was found shortly thereafter in the city of Germersheim.
The man was serving life imprisonment in the prison in Bruchsal. He had allegedly murdered a 44-year-old man, according to the Karlsruhe Regional Court. At the quarry lake, he had met with his wife and children. This was the eighth escape attempt by the German-Kazakh.
Problems during the exit allowed the man to escape despite the monitoring by the two correctional facility employees of the JVA Bruchsal, the Justice Ministry admitted after the incident. Disciplinary action had recently been taken against the two employees. They are still employed at the JVA Bruchsal, according to the Ministry.
