FSB claims to have thwarted attacks against the military
Moscow reports, two alleged plots orchestrated by Ukraine uncovered. The Ukrainian military intelligence is said to have recruited two Russians to carry out attacks against the Russian military. One suspect has already been arrested.
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) claims to have thwarted two attacks against the military in Russia instigated by Ukraine. In an FSB press release in Moscow, it was stated that a 30-year-old Russian citizen was recruited by the Ukrainian military intelligence as an assassin in May. He was supposed to send gift-wrapped explosives to three high-ranking officers as courier services.
According to FSB reports, which lack independent confirmation, the targeted officers were department heads in the Defense Ministry. The suspect was seen being arrested in a publicly released video recording. In the second case, a marine soldier was supposed to carry out an attack on the only Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov." He was promised money and safe passage to Finland by an alleged Ukrainian agent handler.
The soldier, however, informed Russian services. Investigations are ongoing against the unknown instigator and his accomplices. Since the beginning of Moscow's military campaign against Ukraine in 2022, sabotage attacks on railways or other objects, as well as attacks on individuals, have occurred on Russian territory. Prominent Russian war advocates and Ukrainian collaborators have been targeted.
In many cases, involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services is suspected, and they have disclosed information about some actions. However, the regular information the FSB releases about alleged Ukrainian plans or actions is not verifiable. Even when accompanied by videos or documents, they often appear staged.
- The allegations of Ukrainian involvement in orchestrating attacks against Russian military personnel have escalated tensions in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, with secret services from both sides accused of involvement in assassinations.
- Amidst heightened political tensions between Russia and Ukraine, concerns surround potential Russian retaliation for the alleged attacks on their military, such as the attempted bombing of the Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov".
- Russian authorities have long accused Ukraine's secret services of playmaking in the conflict, pointing to instances such as the thwarted attack on Moscow's military, which could neither be independently confirmed nor denied.
