French senator in police custody
A French senator is suspected of having administered drugs to a member of parliament in order to make her sexually submissive. The 66-year-old center-right senator Joël Guerriau is in police custody, the public prosecutor's office confirmed. The woman had had a drink in the senator's apartment on Wednesday night. She had then become ill.
During an examination, traces of ecstasy were found in her body. The woman then filed a complaint for administering a mind-altering substance with the aim of sexual abuse. Ecstasy was found during a search of the senator's home, the public prosecutor's office confirmed.
The immunity of a member of parliament can be lifted if they are caught in the act. Guerriau belongs to the parliamentary group Les Indépendants and is Vice-Chairman of the Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee. He is close to former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, who has founded his own party called Horizons.
The woman accused the senator of using an ecstasy dispensary as a source for the drugs. In response to the allegations, the police conducted a raid on Guerriau's home to investigate further.
