Free Access to Most of ChatGPT's Features Available Now
OpenAI has been continuously broadening the range of features available to users of the free ChatGPT platform. To begin with, the latest model, GPT-4o, became generally available to everyone, although with certain restrictions if not paid for. More recently, OpenAI has made it easier for all users to access major 4o features by removing the barriers for file uploads, visual inputs (which can utilize your camera for input), and GPTs (or personalized chatbots). Features like browsing, data analysis, and memory had already been provided to free users in a somewhat limited capacity.
OpenAI has consistently expressed its intentions to enhance the options available to their free users since they unveiled GPT-4o a few weeks prior, and so far, they have upheld their promise. By providing these new features, it makes subscribing to ChatGPT Plus less significant for many users, understandably a positive outcome for OpenAI. More user engagement leads to more testing of their models for ChatGPT, resulting in overall improvements.
There will be usage limits on the free version of ChatGPT, and after reaching those limits, users will be shifted back to GPT 3.5. OpenAI has yet to open up access to GPT 4 or GPT 4 Turbo for free users. However, this has not discouraged some paid subscribers, who express concern over the purpose of ChatGPT Plus and even inquire about "false hopes of GPT5."
Although paid users receive up to five times more notifications with GPT-4o than free users do, this has not deterred them from asking questions like "what about the paid users?" and "what exactly do paid users get?"
ChatGPT Plus subscribers continue to have the advantage of creating their own GPTs. At this point, it seems that only ChatGPT Plus users will have access to 4o's upcoming voice-activated feature, although this could change in the future.
Expanding the accessibility of ChatGPT's top features puts it on par with one of its primary competitors, Claude, which allows free users to utilize the most recent version of its AI model - albeit through a less potent version of that model.
