Four people killed in record rainfall
At record-breaking torrential rains in several parts of South Korea, four people have died. A meteorology official of the South Korean meteorology agency told the AFP news agency on Wednesday that there were heavy rainfalls of the highest level, occurring only about once every 200 years, in three regions.
According to the Yonhap news agency, citing the Interior Ministry, four people died due to torrential rains.
The meteorology office reported that the cities of Geumsan and Chupungnyeong in the Chungcheong region, as well as Gunsan in the Jeolla province, experienced some of the strongest torrential rains ever recorded.
In Gunsan, 131.7 millimeters of rain fell within an hour on Wednesday morning - more than ten percent of the average annual rainfall in the region. Floodwaters overflowed and streets were flooded, local TV footage showed people wading through waist-deep water.
A body was found in an elevator, according to Yonhap, after a house in South Chungcheong was flooded. Another victim was sucked into the sewage system in the city of Daegu. Another person died when their car was pulled into a river, and another when their house collapsed.
Train traffic in the southern part of the country was partially suspended. Interior Minister Lee Sang-min urged people to avoid underground parking lots, underpasses, and riverbanks.
During the monsoon season in the summer, South Korea is usually hit by flooding. However, the country is generally well-prepared for such incidents.
The record rainfall in South Korea resulted in the death of four individuals, as reported by the Interior Ministry. This heavy downpour in Gunsan resulted in 131.7 millimeters of rain falling within an hour, significantly impacting the lives of the local people, as demonstrated by the footage of flooded streets and people wading through waist-deep water.
