- Four federal states start the new school year today
After the end of the summer holidays in Thuringia last Thursday, schools also start again this Monday in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, as well as Lower Saxony and Bremen. This means that now only eleven federal states are still on holiday.
The last returnees to schools will again be the Bavarians in 2024, with the first day of school in the Free State being September 10th. The most populous federal state, North Rhine-Westphalia, will start the new school year 2024/25 on August 21st.
Lower Saxony has around 840,000 pupils starting today, Saxony has approximately 536,000, Saxony-Anhalt has around 214,000, and Bremen has more than 70,000. Thuringia started last Thursday with around 264,000 pupils.
Traditionally, there are many different holiday start dates in Germany, which the federal states coordinate among themselves. This year, there are seven different ones. For example, France has a nationwide uniform holiday period: this summer, all pupils there have been on holiday from July 6th to September 1st.
The new school year 2024/25 will commence for North Rhine-Westphalia on August 21st, marking the beginning of their academic calendar. Following the holidays, schools in Bavaria will resume on September 10th, concluding the return of all federal states, thus ending the school year break.
