Former Chief Strategist of ex-US President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, began a four-month prison sentence. "I am proud to go to prison today," said the 70-year-old, before entering the Federal prison in Danbury in the state of Connecticut.

Bannon was sentenced to prison in October 2022 for contempt of Congress, but remained free during the appeal process. His appeal was then denied by a federal court in May.

The former chief of the ultraconservative website "Breitbart" was sentenced because he refused to comply with a subpoena from the parliamentary investigative committee regarding the Capitol storming on January 6, 2021. Fanatical Trump supporters wanted to prevent the formal certification of Biden's election victory against Trump in the Congress building in Washington with the storming of the Capitol.

Another important advisor to Trump, Peter Navarro, was also sentenced for contempt of Congress and has been serving a four-month prison sentence since March.

Bannon was a central figure in Trump's presidential campaign in 2016. After Trump's election victory, he then became Chief Strategist in the White House. Trump fired him, however, in August 2017. The two right-wing populists drew closer again later. Bannon also maintains contacts with ultraconservative groups in Europe.
