Former Philippine President Duterte expresses interest in joining the Senate
Rodrigo Duterte, ex-president of the Philippines, is set to compete in the upcoming mid-term elections as a senator, as per his daughter and fellow senator Sara Duterte. At 79 years old, Duterte aims to reenter politics after declaring his departure from it at the end of his term in 2022. This isn't the first time Duterte has hinted at a political comeback.
Sara Duterte previously ran as a vice presidential candidate alongside the current President, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., but the two have clashed on major issues. Last week, she stepped down as Education Minister and head of a committee on insurgency, although she still serves as Vice President.
There exist differences between Rodrigo Duterte and Marcos. Duterte alleges that Marcos wants to scrap the presidential term limit. Additionally, Marcos has expressed intentions to loosen Duterte's strict stance on drug criminals. Moreover, Marcos has adopted a tough stance against China, contrasting Duterte's friendly relationship with the nation.
Sara Duterte hinted that she might decide to run for Mayor of Davao again, a position she briefly held following her father. She remained vague about her future plans, mentioning a possible comeback but not specifying when. Meanwhile, her brother Sebastian Duterte, the current Mayor of Davao, aims to run for presidency in 2028, according to Sara.
