Former officials in Puerto Rico to face charges for alleged acts of corruption.
Some around 30 ex-government officials are anticipated to face charges in Puerto Rico for misusing approximately 30 million US dollars in public funds, according to the Justice Ministry of the Caribbean state linked with the USA.
One of the accused is previous legislator María Milagros Charbonier, who was imprisoned for eight years in May following her conviction for theft, bribery, and participation in a bribery scheme.
Similarly, former mayor of Catán, Félix Delgado, and Ángel Pérez, former mayor of Guaynabo, are also under investigation. Delgado was given a one-year prison sentence after confessing to accepting bribes in exchange for the allocation of multimillion-dollar municipal contracts.
Pérez was sentenced to five years in prison in February following his conviction for bribery and extortion. The Justice Ministry of Puerto Rico has been repeatedly criticized for not addressing the rampant corruption within government circles with sufficient action.
