An ex-worker of the Augsburg Cathedral Choir received a probation sentence of almost two years for sexually abusing a child and secretly filming naked boys.
The 26-year-old admitted all charges right at the start of the trial at the Augsburg District Court. As he was less than 21 years old at the time of some of the offenses, his probation sentence was determined under the Juvenile Justice Act.
He secretly documented members of a boys' choir while they were using the toilet and shower. In total, nine recordings of this nature were included in the case. Additionally, he molested a 13-year-old by grinding his body on the sleeping child. This incident took place when the child stayed at his home in Munich with the choir worker.
Previously, the man had been an aide to this well-known Catholic choir, having originally been a choir member himself. The crimes took place between 2017 and 2020, and since then, the man, who now lives in Dresden, hasn't been a part of the choir.
The man repeatedly apologized to his victims, some of whom served as witnesses in court. Judge Bernhard Kugler commented in his ruling, "The worst part is the shattered trust." The kids viewed the defendant as a role model due to his position as a choir worker.
The man hadn't just recorded the videos inside the church choir's quarters. One time, the choir was staying at a hotel in Brandenburg for a concert tour. The man had been receiving treatment for his sexual deviance for more than three years and must continue it as part of his probation. His lawyer stated that the defendant suffered from "sexual misdirection." The defendant is also required to pay the abused boy 2,000 euros in compensation.
At the outset of the trial, the judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney had agreed privately that if the defendant admitted guilt, he would likely face a probation sentence of about two years. The defendant was commended for his confession because it spared the victims from testifying in court.
For the Augsburg Cathedral Choir, it's crucial that the ongoing investigations are now resolved with the conclusion of the trial, said business manager Leonhard Fitz. In the past, there have been information sessions with a police officer for the parents, and preventive training has been provided to the students.
The Catholic boys' choir is the pride of the Diocese of Augsburg. One of the arresting officers testified in court that the management of the choir provided good support during the investigations.
