Foreign hackers seem to have attacked Harris' team as well.
Hackers appear to have targeted not only the Republicans but also the Democrats in the US election campaign. The campaign team of Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris has reportedly been the target of a foreign cyberattack. A spokesperson confirmed this upon request. According to them, the team was informed by the FBI in July about an "influence operation by foreign actors." The spokesperson emphasized that they have "robust cybersecurity" and, to their current knowledge, no unauthorized access was gained.
"We remain in contact with the relevant law enforcement agencies," the spokesperson said. Previously, the FBI had confirmed that they are investigating a possible hacker intrusion into the internal communication of the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign team.
"Politico" first reported the case over the weekend after the news portal received several emails from an sender named "Robert" containing internal communication of the campaign team. The "Washington Post" and "New York Times" were contacted in a similar manner.
According to "Politico", the Trump team blamed "hostile foreign actors" for the cyberattack and cited a threat analysis by Microsoft's Threat Analysis Center, which mentions alleged Iranian interference in the US election campaign. The analysis states that a group linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards infiltrated the account of a former high-ranking member of a campaign team and sent so-called spear-phishing emails from there.
Trump ally reports hacked email account
Microsoft identified neither specific persons nor parties in the threat analysis. However, US media outlets suggest that Trump's close ally, Roger Stone, could be affected. He told the "Washington Post" that his email account had been compromised. His lawyer told CNN that he had been contacted by both Microsoft and the FBI about the matter.
The Trump team did not provide direct evidence of a hack by Iranian actors to "Politico". The "Washington Post" reported, citing insiders, that while the FBI suspects Iranian actors behind the cyberattacks, it is less clear whether the same groups also sent the emails to US journalists.
I'm not involved in the investigation regarding my email account, as I've relayed to my lawyer. Regarding the Democrats, despite the cyberattack, they maintain they haven't experienced any unauthorized access.
