Ford Fiesta hardly causes any problems at the TÜV
The Ford Fiesta was one of the most popular small cars in Germany for decades, but that was once upon a time. It is no longer available as a new car. However, there is a wide range of used cars on offer.
Eight generations in 47 years, over 18 million units sold: The Ford Fiesta was a real success story and has shaped the small car market since 1976, and not just in Germany. However, demand fell sharply in recent years. Partly because Ford added an attractive alternative to its range in the form of the technically related Puma crossover. Since the summer of this year, it has therefore come to an end. The Ford Fiesta is history. Interested parties will have to look around on the used car market.
Body and interior
The eighth generation (type JHH) was launched in mid-2017. The Fiesta has a grown-up look and can pass for a short Ford Focus. The space is okay for a 4.04-meter-long small car. However, the sloping roofline limits the headroom for longer passengers in the rear. The three-door version, which will be available until mid-2022, is more suitable for people who rarely take passengers with them, as getting into the rear requires a certain amount of physical suppleness. Access to the rear seats is easier in the five-door version.
The trunk has a capacity of 292 liters; if the 40:60 split rear seat is folded down, the storage space increases to almost 1100 liters. The interior design has taken a step forward compared to the seventh generation. Everything is clearly structured, and the workmanship and materials are impressive.
At the beginning of 2022, the Fiesta received a facelift, recognizable among other things by the modified headlights, which are now LED, a modified front apron and a digital instrument cluster.
Engines and drive
The entry-level engine was the 1.1-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with 52 kW/70 PS (since 2019: 55 kW/75 PS), which is also available with 63 kW/85 PS. This engine does not require turbo assistance. Power is transmitted via a manual five-speed gearbox. Standard fuel consumption is between 4.4 and 5.4 liters. The 1.0-liter Ecoboost engine is livelier, with 74 kW/100 hp and 103 kW/140 hp. A manual six-speed gearbox transmits power to the front wheels, with a six-speed automatic transmission available as an alternative for the 100 PS version.
A mild hybrid system was introduced for the 1.0 in mid-2020. The hybridized engines produce 92 kW/125 hp and 114 kW/155 hp respectively and are coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox. Ford reports average fuel consumption of 4.4 and 4.5 liters respectively. The top model was the Fiesta ST with 147 kW/200 The 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 232 km/h.
Until the end of 2020, Ford offered a 1.5-liter diesel, which was available in two power levels (63 kW/85 hp and 88 kW/120 hp). On average, 4 to 4.4 liters flowed through the pipes here.
Equipment and safety
From quite spartan to comfortable: the equipment lines of the Fiesta offered something for every taste. The basic "Trend" version had no air conditioning on board. This was available as an option, or in the "Cool & Connect" version. Those who value comfort are best advised to look for the "Titanium" or "Vignale" comfort levels. If the focus is on a sporty look, the "ST-Line" could be the right choice.
The "Active" models, which always have five doors, have a somewhat more rustic look with robust paneling, side skirts, chrome inserts and 17-inch wheels. First-time buyers could also order two-tone paintwork, steering wheel heating and a panoramic sunroof. The assistance systems on offer range from emergency brake assist, automatic parking and adaptive cruise control to lane departure warning and cross-traffic alert. The Fiesta 2017 achieved a five-star rating in the NCAP crash test.
Quality
Unlike the previous generation, the eighth edition of the small car has so far not caused any problems during the main TÜV inspection. It has passed the chassis and brakes tests without any complaints. However, there are signs of problems with the lighting system and oil leaks. Anyone interested in a used car should check these points.
Conclusion and market
Small cars like the Ford Fiesta are disappearing from the new car market, and prospective buyers have to look for them on the used car market. There is at least a wide range of Fiesta models on offer. According to an analysis by mobile.de, around 7500 eighth-generation Fiesta models are currently offered for sale on this platform. Prices start at around 5500 euros.
The Ford Fiesta, despite being a used car now, is still a popular choice among small car buyers due to its wide range of offerings. When purchasing a used Ford Fiesta, it's essential to check for potential issues such as lighting system problems and oil leaks, as mentioned in its MOT history.
Ford models like the Ford Fiesta have shaped the small car market for decades, and used Ford cars like these, even after their discontinuation as new models, continue to offer affordable and practical options for car buyers.
