Derogenes abba - Flatworm named after Abba

Researchers have named a flatworm found on Spitsbergen after the pop group ABBA. They wanted to express their admiration for the music of the Swedish cult band and its positive influence on their lives, as the Natural History Museum in Stockholm announced.

Moreover, the researcher in charge, Chahinez Bouguerche, wanted to mark the 50th anniversary of "the magical evening in Brighton" in 1974. That's when ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Waterloo" and launched their world career.

Bouguerche listened to the music of her favorite band during the creation of the drawings of the parasitic worm that lived in a fish. She eventually decided to honor the pop group in this way. The new species, discovered on the North Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen (Svalbard), therefore bears the Latin name Derogenes abba.
