1. Mexican Election
Mexico is poised to elect its first female president after millions turned up to vote yesterday. Claudia Sheinbaum from the leftist Morena party is projected to win the country's biggest election, defeating Xochitl Gálvez from the opposition coalition. Along with the presidency, over 20,000 government positions are due to be filled after a campaign season marred by violence. Since June 2023, at least 34 political candidates or applicants have been killed by criminal organizations trying to influence those with power. This upcoming vote also comes just months before the US presidential election, where immigration could be a key issue.
2. Hunter Biden Trial
Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, will face trial today for gun-related charges. He is accused of illegally purchasing and possessing a gun while abusing or being addicted to drugs, violating federal law. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to the charges, but he has opened up about his battles with alcohol and crack cocaine. This is a historical moment, as it's the first time in American history where the child of the sitting president is going on trial - which could potentially impact President Biden's re-election bid. If convicted on all three counts, the president's son could face up to 25 years in prison.
3. Trump's Conviction
Former President Donald Trump said he's "OK" with serving potential jail time or being under house arrest following his historic conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. "I'm OK with it," Trump told Fox News in an interview that aired Sunday. However, he added, "I think it would be tough for the public to take, you know, at a certain point, there's a breaking point." A Manhattan jury last week found Trump guilty of all charges in his hush money trial, making him the first former president to become a convicted felon. In an attempt to connect with younger voters, Trump has also joined TikTok - a social media platform with ties to China that he has decried as president. The Biden administration, for its part, also has a presence on TikTok even as they have supported a nationwide TikTok ban.
4. Middle East
Two far-right Israeli ministers have threatened to resign and bring down the governing coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he accepts a peace proposal laid out by President Biden. Joe Biden unveiled on Friday what he said was a three-phase Israeli proposal to end the conflict in Gaza that would pair a release of hostages with a "full and complete ceasefire." Biden said Hamas had been degraded to a point where it could no longer carry out the kind of attack seen on October 7 that caused the current war in Gaza. However, the two Israeli ministers made it clear they reject an immediate ceasefire. Netanyahu has also signaled he isn't ready yet, casting doubt on Biden's proposal.
5. Trash Balloons
North Korea has pledged to stop sending trash-filled balloons to South Korea following reports of hundreds more waste-laden deliveries drifting across the border. North Korea's deputy minister of defense claimed the trash balloons were "strictly a responsive act" to South Korea's long-standing practice of sending balloons with anti-North Korea leaflets their way. Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong, a senior official in the reclusive North Korean regime, referred to the balloons as "sincere presents." A South Korean official promised retaliation measures, to be determined in the near future.
